After buying a company with it's own CMS that it had developed over several years we thought we had something special. In hindsight, we did have something special, however after being shown Joomla!, we quickly realised that Joomla! is the CMS of choice. It wasn't that our CMS wasn't fully featured, easy to use, or extensible. It was. It was more that the Joomla! project has a great sense of excitement about it and the contributing community, from end users through extension developers to the core team, all showed a great passion for it and for thier contributions.
Recently there was an article by Jeff Atwood that talked about successful software development projects primarily happening only in teams that were passionate about what they were doing. We have consistently found this to be true of the Joomla! project. One of the joys of working in such a community is the vast differences in people that are working to achieve the same end. There are people from all over the world, people with different languages, people whose living circumstances I can't even begin to imagine, yet they and we are all sharing in this common system.
Some of us are trying to make a living from Joomla! and it is such a good product that it is possible to do so. Others in our midst and many of our clients are just happy to see that there is such a good solution available. Many of those groups are amazed that it is the product of so few and that it doesn't cost the world to share it or participate in. I guess we are just blessed to be able to work in this living community, doing what we enjoy and using it to benefit others.
